Here is our countdown of some of the top trends for the Spring/Summer 2009 Season:
1. Sheer Fabrics
Sheer fabric is back as one of hottest 2008 and 2009 fashion trends, and plenty of celebrities are wearing it. But don't worry, it's not all about tight, see-through tops, and dresses that scream 'look at me' as we saw in the 1990s. Run your eyes over the Spring / Summer 2008 and Spring / Summer 2009 runway collections and you'll find sheer fabrics used in a multitude of ways: tight sheer pieces, layers, and the much sought after delicate, feminine draping. Not limited to the usual though, 2008 also ushers in sheer skirts and pants - pair them with more modest bloomers or boy-shorts rather than a skimpy thong and you'll keep the look elegant.
And elegance really is the key to wearing the sheer fashion trend this year. While it was last at its most popular in the 1990s, it was in 2006 that it last hit our radar.

2. Fringed Fashion
It was as if a single, defined element was plucked from 2008's flapper revival, elaborated upon and then modernised. That element was fringing; and if there's one thing every girl should be partying in during Spring/Summer 2009, it's that perfect fringed piece. As a Spring/Summer 2009 trend the fringed dress or skirt becomes sleek, sexy and feminine - less theme-party flapper costume and more in the now.
On the Spring/Summer 2009 runways, this burgeoning trend was prominent. Alexander McQueen's pieces were more to the structured side with sinew-esque fringing slinking around the body. Jil Sander's fringing was long and free-flowing, Alberta Ferretti's delicately pretty; while Gaspard Yurkievich took inspiration more from the Burlesque than the Jazz Age.
It depends largely upon the style and themeing of the piece. A pair of long, toned legs work wonders for a short fringed skirt; those lacking need to be a tad more cautious. The appeal of fringing also owes alot to the way it moves, so pay careful attention to buying quality fabrics that shimmy and shine and don't clump unattractively together.

3. One-Shoulder Trend
Legs and breasts are often a girl's best fashion accessory, but if neither are your strongest features, or you're after something a little less cliche but equally sensual, look to your shoulders and indulge in both the backless fashion trend and the one-shoulder / single-shoulder trend. Both are key components of women's Spring/Summer 2008 fashion trends and Spring/Summer 2009 fashion trends.

4. Grecian Dresses
It's a logical flow-on from the one-shoulder fashion trend; a new breed of draping Grecian Goddess dresses. A notable runway trend for 2009, anything with a Grecian or Romanesque inspiration is a sure hit for the Spring/Summer 2009 season.
Classical one-shoulder draping graced the runways of Elie Saab, Valentino and others, while Kenzo's dresses had more of a Romanesque tunic feel to them.
Make use of the ongoing gladiator sandals trend of course! Pair a more casual Grecian dress with flat, buckled sandals, or a lush flowing gown with strappy heeled shoes. If the dress is plain, team it up with some exotic statement jewelry to bring it well into 2009.

5. Tribal Ethnic Trend
As it did with bohemian inspired looks as one of the first 2009 fashion trends, fashion has gone global for Spring/Summer 2009, with designers drawing inspiration from every corner of the globe. A look which started with Yves Saint Laurent's legendary safari jump suits has been re-interpreted this season, and designers from Christopher Kane to Paul Smith have looked to Africa and the Orient for their muse. Tribal themes can be seen with the strong use of animal prints at Christopher Kane, in cheetah and leopard print tops, combined with geometric shaped skirts in earthy hues such as grass green. Turbans also crop up again and again, another simple way to update your wardrobe for this season's fascination with global fashion.
An African feel is also apparent in the Egyptian style drapery and sheer neutral toned fabrics at Paul Smith and Max Azria, which give the ensemble a regal chic reminiscent of Queen of the Nile, Cleopatra. Further majesty can be seen in the flowing kaftans at Reem Arca and Gucci in dusty gold and sapphire blue respectively. Sensuality is also prevalent in these globally-inspired collections. Look no further than the use of the sheer trend, with semi-transparent fabrics, at Proenza Schouler to see what I am talking about. On the other hand, Safari style practicality is another recurring theme, seen with the re-worked and practical jump suits in neutral tones at Ralph Lauren and Lacoste.
To pull off this look you need to pick one of the outlined themes and stick to it - don't wear a sheer jumpsuit with a leopard print cardigan! For the daytime, the animal print look of Christopher Kane is a safe bet, as is the Safari casual, with beige shorts and simple sandals. Obviously, these will work best in summer and might look a bit out of place in the winter. The regal side of the trend is perfect for evening wear, with sheer flowing fabrics draped to perfection. It couldn't be easier. That said, avoid tribal overkill by keeping accessories to a minimum, and footwear appropriate - don't combine a maxi with 6 inch platform heels!

6. Butterfly Motif
While stars were 2008's motif of choice, 2009 brings a new emblem into our wardrobes: the butterfly. Butterflies can symbolise many things - from the hope of resurrection, to the reminder of the ephemerality of life. We suppose that as a Spring/Summer 2009 trend though, it's best to view them as a symbol of beauty, femininity, and the ability to be ever-changing.
Collette Dinnigan's collection was littered with flowing, gently ruffled pieces in lilac butterfly prints, while the butterfly motif in Tibi's collection were a perfect compliment to the cocoon skirts and oriental collars. Diane von Furstenberg and Badgley Mischka also used butterfly themes in their Spring/Summer collections.
Exactly as per our advice about the star trend: avoid the kitchy. If you decide to dabble in butterflies in the coming warmer seasons, ensure they remain delicate, elegant and sophisticated; feminine but not too girly.

7. Jewel-Encrusted Clothing
Precious stones, glass and crystals adorned many an embellished item on the Spring/Summer 2009 runways. Not limited to evening gowns, this elegant version of bling also found its way onto jackets, day-dresses and accessories. Whether exotic or classical, bejewelled clothing is most certainly going to be a fashion trend for 2009.
Zac Posen embraced the exotic with Egyptian-themed jewel details, while Alberta Ferretti mixed lavish jewels with feminine fringing. It was Alexander McQueen, however, that produced the most breathtaking variations on this trend, from his bejewelled shoes to a neck-to-toe jewel encrusted catsuit.
This is the one Spring/Summer 2009 trend that you won't need to pile your statement jewellery on with. Each jewel-studded piece should be a statement of its own: make it stand out.
As with most runway trends, also be wary of how this translates to high-street versions; quality is paramount when it comes to jewel detailing.

8. Exposed Midriff Trend
Get out your credit cards and book a gym membership ladies because, as if muffin top wasn't a scary enough prospect, here comes the Spring/Summer 2009 exposed midriff fashion trend. Even as a I write this, I worry about how drastically wrong an exposed waist fashion trend may just go. Certainly, even though it evokes a tad too much of the 1980s for me to be truly comfortable, it looks hot on the catwalks; but you could put a garbage a garbage on supermodels and they'd still make it look sexual.
This trend is for skinny girls only!
I don't mean to cause a body-image crisis here, but let's face facts: hipster jeans ended up so low that on many a girl they were a pure turn off, as opposed to the wardrobe revolution we were promised. And it'll be much the same for the 2009's exposed waistline look.

9. Fairy-Tale Romance Trend
Flouncing ruffles, rosette clusters, and delicate capelets. Moving away from the sleek and sexy, some designers topped off their Spring/Summer 2009 runway shows with the ultimate in romantic gowns; making the fairy-tale dress somewhat of a 2009 fashion trend.
Nina Ricci was definitely the leader in this trend on the Spring/Summer 2009 runways - her sweeping trains, puffed sleeves, and delicate detailing made for the most romantic and ethereal designs. Also look to Roberto Cavalli and Chanel for more shining examples.
Ok, so we're not really expecting many people to head down to their local Starbucks dressed like Cinderella. For the better part, this trend will most likely be reflected on red carpets, and in editorial shoots.
That said, you can certainly indulge in this trend as evening wear and for special occasions. For an every-day take, select an element of the trend and mix it in with your existing wardrobe. Rock up a romantic puff-sleeved capelet by pairing it with ripped denim and super-high heels; or play down a full, ruffled skirt with a simple tee or singlet.

10. Ripped Denim
Ripped denim hasn't really been big since the grunge days of the 90s... so it may come as a surprise that it is back as a fashion trend for women in Spring-Summer 2009. Kate Moss wore ripped denim shorts in a shoot for April Vogue Paris, and then we spotted these shots of Gisele Bundchen on set with Mario Testino in a rather revealing torn denim outfit.
So there you have it, these are the 10 top fashion trends of the Spring/Summer 2009 Season, try one or try them all. The most important thing is that you wear them with confidence and coordinate them accordingly. Good Luck & Happy Shopping!
